We never had a bed recess - we just had a bed at the side of the fire- we had a coal cupboard and off the other wall was the small bedroom. We were lucky enough to have a bedroom with one bed in it which slept the four of us Truthfully speaking I've been in a house with a bed recess and actually to me they're very claustrophobic because if you're at the wall side you were just facing into the wall. It was all right if you were in the bed on your own, but if it was two of you and you were on the wall side, you felt suffocated. Some folks had curtains (over the recess), but not them all. I had curtains on the recess that you drew and then nobody would see you & underneath you put all your rubbish.
