All of these words could be heard in the streets of Edinburgh. How many of them do you recognise?

Mankie dirty; The word mankie was used in the old days for anything that was really dirty

Corrie dukit left handed; At school you weren't allowed to write left handed- you had to use your right hand

Hippin it's an old Scottish word for a nappie- probably tied on the baby with a pin at each side

Cloot it's a cloth that we always used for to wash the floor

Mogo pogo eyes now you call them gob stoppers- you suck them & suck them and inside they had a wee seed- when you get finished

Narkie bad tempered

Baw face rounded face/ rather podgy

Clout to get a clout on the jaw would be a slap on the face

Four Eyes someone who wore spectacles

Bairnie a bairnie was child

Dolaker alarge marble- the big one was a dolaker

Tollie bowel movement

Peerie a spinning top mostly used with the boys

Peevers that's a game of hopscotch- hopping up on one leg on a design shaped like an aeroplane- played on the pavement

Clipe someone who goes and tells tales about somebody

A dub that's what the kids jump in when it's raining - a puddle!

Glaikit someone who looks kind of stupid

Dreech misty, dull- typical Scottish weather

Aye used for yes

Cludgy a word for the toilet- usually out the back in the back yard

Pluke that's someone that's got a pimple on their face

The bunker that's where you used to keep the coal at the kitchen window. It was a wooden box

Ben the hoose that was to go and get something in another room

Fankle in a fankle means you are mixed up

Shin old Scottish word for shoe

Rammy when there's several folk together and there's a bit of a disagreement

Lassie/Laddie it's just another name for a girl/boy

Poke a bag - If you spent a ha'penny you got a poke (of chips). If you spent a penny you got a bag   (Poke covers a lot of things in Scotland. There's an ice cream poke which is a cone. And there's also a poke of chips, which is a folded newspaper full of potato chips. There's also different kinds of paper pokes. That's over and above the kind of poke you give to someone you don't like with your digit!)
